The 2012 Breastfeeding Report Card from the Centers for Disease Control shows that only 27.3 percent of Kentucky mothers are breastfeeding when the baby is 6 months old. By the time the baby is 12 months old, only 10.8 percent of Kentucky mothers are still breastfeeding.
In comparison, the highest rates for breastfeeding were in Oregon: 68.1 percent at 6 months and 48.7 percent at 12 months.
Discussing the issue are Cerise Bouchard, owner of Mother Nurture and president of the Lactation Improvement Network of Kentucky; Doraine Bailey, breastfeeding coordinator for the Lexington-Fayette County Health Department; and Janet Johnson, breastfeeding coordinator for the Pike County Health Department.
