Quilter Sallie Johnson/Writer Nita Clarke (#746)
Quilter Sallie Johnson turned her hobby into a source of income. The self-taught artist recycles old clothing into quilts, wall hangings, handbags, and more. She also has created quilts from drawings of people like President Obama and University of Kentucky Coach John Calipari.
A Veteran's Legacy, published by Gracie Mae Publications in 2010, is a journal designed to help veterans and their families share their stories. The journal offers three sample stories as well as sample questions veterans can use to write their own stories in the blank pages at the end of the book. The book is illustrated by Jay McChord of Lexington.
The book also promotes the Library of Congress Veterans History Project, which collects and preserves the personal accounts of American war veterans.
Nita Clarke of Lexington, a Vietnam veteran who served as a military journalist, has worked in talk radio and is the author of Timothy and the Blanket Fairy, The Mystery at Rancho Verde and The Mint Julep Trilogy (Days 1, 2 and 3).
