Byron Hurt (#825)
Byron Hurt is an award-winning documentary filmmaker, writer, anti-sexist activist, and lecturer. "Soul Food Junkies" made its national television premiere on PBS' Emmy award-winning series, Independent Lens, in January 2013.
Through its look at soul food, the film also investigates the dark side of the food industry and the growing food justice movement. Hurt's father died of pancreatic cancer, something he believes is linked to his life-long dietary habits and which served as the inspiration for his film.
The film also shows how fast food and processed foods have often replaced home cooked meals, and Hurt discusses how activists are encouraging dietary changes and making fresh produce available and affordable in urban cores.
