Roszalyn Akins (#903)

Roszalyn Akins is an educator, motivator, minister, and trailblazer. A long-time Fayette County educator, she started a Saturday program called Future Black Males Working that exposed kids to a world of experiences they'd likely never gain otherwise, while at the same time demanding their academic best. That program gave birth to Akins' vision for a college preparatory school, the Carter G. Woodson Academy.

Known as the Father of Black History, Carter G. Woodson (1875-1950) was born in Virginia and began his formal education at age 20. He earned a doctorate from Harvard and pioneered the study of African-American history.
