P.G. PeeplesP.G. Peeples
Lynch/Lexington
1945-

Porter G. Peeples grew up in Lynch in Eastern Kentucky, attending public schools subsidized by U.S. Steel, owner of the area mines. By the time he enrolled at the University of Kentucky as one of about 50 African-American students, he was prepared for the challenge. He had spent several summers living with relatives and working in New York City, and he had attended Hazard Community College.

Shortly after graduating from UK, Peeples became education director for the Lexington Urban League. He was soon named director of the chapter—the youngest director in the nation.

Peeples is keenly aware of his role as an advocate for people in need in the Lexington community. Under his leadership, the Lexington Urban League operates programs for clerical training, open housing (including rehabilitating and financing housing), community development, and training in penal institutions, as well as a community radio station. Peeples also chairs the Equity Commission that monitors the Fayette County Public Schools.
