The Triple Crown of the South’s New Economy: Research, Development, and Technology
Governors and other officials from 18 states met in Lexington, KY September 9 and 10, 2001 for the 67th annual conference of the Southern Governors’ Association. The conference, which featured keynote addresses by U.S. Vice President Dick Cheney, NASDAQ Vice Chairman Alfred R. Berkley III, and long-time White House correspondent Helen Thomas, addressed issues of economic policy, government support of research and technology initiatives, energy and resource development, and workforce education.

- LUNCHEON: Front Row at the White House with Helen Thomas
Helen Thomas, a Kentucky native who has covered the White House for UPI since 1961 and questioned every president since John F. Kennedy, reflects on how the presidency and citizens’ relationships to it have been reshaped over the last four decades.
Note: The planned third day of the conference was cancelled due to the September 11 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington.
