Inside Writing Communities: Building Skills For Success, Grades 3-5

16-part video series with participant’s guide and interactive Web site; available from Annenberg Media
This video workshop, produced by KET with funding from Annenberg Media, consists of eight pairs of half-hour videos, with each pair addressing a single broad topic related to the teaching of writing. The web site includes a viewing guide, resources for teachers, eight interactive activities, and a workshop guide that can be downloaded and printed. The first video in each pair explores how teachers in grades 3-5 create classrooms that nurture and support the writing confidence of all students and help them forge unique writing identities. It includes narration, interviews with literacy experts, and multiple classroom illustrations that communicate and support the workshop learning goals. Instructional content is reinforced by online reading assignments, pre-workshop activities, and discussion questions. The second video in each pair features extended classroom applications narrated by the teachers themselves along with commentary from literacy experts. Kentucky Principals, Leading By Example

This 60-minute video features noted Kentucky educators discussing changes in principal preparation programs across the state. The panelists also discuss the impact on student learning of principals who serve as effective instructional leaders of their schools. This program was the precursor to KET's Education Matters, a monthly program focusing on Kentucky education issues.

Literacy Central—A Literacy Planning Resource For Kentucky

The FREE collection of information and resources in Literacy Central is designed to provide, in one location, guidance to educators on the development, implementation and monitoring of literacy plans. First time users must register through KET EncycloMedia.

Comprehensive literacy planning is a community responsibility that begins at birth, but the size and scope of the planning process can be challenging. Now, professional learning communities and/or literacy teams have an easy-to-access collection of videos, documents, reflection questions, activities, and templates to make the process easier.

The featured element of the collection is the interactive Literacy Plan for Kentucky, originally developed by the Kentucky Department of Education. This customizable resource helps you start and monitor the planning process and includes video tutorials to guide you through writing your plan. It also includes strategies for:

• Developing a common definition for literacy
• Developing a school-wide literacy vision
• Setting up a team
• Analyzing data

The Literacy Plan for Kentucky is fully integrated with the nine elements of the Literacy Program Effectiveness Review for Kentucky Schools (PERKS) and supports the implementation of Kentucky's Core Academic Standards for literacy.

Literacy Leadership: Stories Of Schoolwide Success

KET and the Kentucky Department of Education visited a variety of schools in Kentucky and interviewed principals, literacy coaches, curriculum specialists, state educational cooperative literacy consultants, and teachers in a effort to provide video examples of the type of leadership described in research-based standards. These video clips can be integrated into professional learning community discussions of effective instructional leadership or used in principal preparation programs.

Literacy Leadership examines successful literacy programs at nine Kentucky schools. Videos are organized by school and also can be navigated by the "Seven Disciplines for Strengthening Instruction" as defined in Change Leadership, A Practical Guide to Transforming Our Schools by Tony Wagner.

Produced in partnership with the Kentucky Department of Education, Literacy Without Limits is a helpful, non-intimidating, and immediately useful resource for teachers whose students struggle to read. Effective instruction in a variety of subjects and settings is illustrated through authentic Kentucky classroom video, with teachers providing insight into their planning and pedagogical reasoning. All videos are supported by explanations of key practices along with links to lesson materials. KDE has distributed a free copy of the DVD-ROMs to every public school in the state. Kentucky schools may freely duplicate the DVDs, and additional copies may be ordered from KET.

Raindrops To Rivers

Presented on CD-ROM and the Web, Raindrops to Rivers is a resource containing both an electronic field trip and supporting professional development resources to help teachers in grades 2 through 12 introduce concepts involving watersheds, water pollution, non point source pollution, and common cures for everyday sources of water pollution. Raindrops to Rivers supports the content presented in the Electronic Field Trip to a Watershed with models of exemplary instruction. Teachers from classrooms throughout Kentucky illustrate scientific study as well as awareness and prevention of non point source water pollution. The teachers and students appearing in the videos are engaged in authentic activities, in both indoor and outdoor classrooms and at streams, creeks, and other watersheds. In addition to presenting engaging science lessons, the resource features collaborations between science and other content areas.

The CD-ROMs were distributed to Kentucky science teachers, and the same content can be accessed online.

Write In The Middle: A Workshop For Middle School Teachers

In this workshop series, produced by KET and distributed nationally by Annenberg Media, classroom video and insightful discussion illustrate effective ways teachers can help their students become confident and proficient writers. Middle school teachers from across the country share strategies they use with their students, while other video segments explore the phases of the writing process and illustrate successful strategies for teaching specific writing forms.
