Student Videos About Being Good and Safe Digital Citizens

In addition to our year-round invitation to share student-produced videos on all subjects at KET's School Video Project website, the KET School Video Project Challenge — Digital Citizenship, was an opportunity to integrate multimedia technology and media studies with Kentucky Kentucky Core Academic Standards for Technology in a fun activity for project-based learning. It was also s a chance to win a greenscreen and light kit for making more great student projects! See below for the results of this project's drawing winners.

Project focus was on school and community efforts to help Kentucky students be good and safe digital citizens, respectful of others' rights and feelings while protecting themselves as they navigate the Internet, make and share multimedia projects, participate in social networking, and develop critical media awareness. Student videos could be brief projects like PSAs (public service announcements) on safe and respectful digital behavior (not texting while driving); news-story expolorations on how to develop media awareness and critical viewing skills; recorded discussions and solutions to common problems such as cyber-bullying and more.

Student Digital Citizenship Video Examples

Put Down That Text Video Still Texting While Driving Still Pay Attention Stay Alive Video Still

Mullins Elementary's, "Put Down That Text," is a good example of a public service announcement (PSA) video warning against the dangers of texting while driving. Texting While Driving, by Conner Middle School in Boone County, is an excellent anti-texting while driving PSA that uses greenscreen video effects. Mason County High School also made an excellent anti-texting while driving video, Pay Attention, Stay Alive, that features excellent use of greenscreen effects. And there you have it: three great Digitial Citizenship video examples made by elementary, middle, and high school students! Please participate in our latest student video challenge by uploading your own videos!

Curriculum Connections

Kentucky's Core Academic Standards for Technology at the primary, intermediate, middle, and high school levels, lists many elements of Digital Citizenship under the Big Ideas Safety and Ethical/Social Issues (technology behavior and safety), and Research, Inquiry/Problem-Solving and Innovation (critical thinking skills to solve a variety of problems in real-life situations, and to make informed decisions — also known as critical media awareness).

National Technology Standards for students from ISTE lists Digital Citizenship as number 5 of their 6 basic standards for student use of technology:

"Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal and ethical behavior. Students advocate and practice safe, legal, and responsible use of information and technology; exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration, learning, and productivity; and demonstrate personal responsibility for lifelong learning.exhibit leadership for digital citizenship."

ISTE also lists Critical Thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making, as their #4 student technology standard, which is often included under general Digital Citizenship study: "Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage projects, solve problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate digital tools and resources."

An important aspect of Digital Citizenship is Critical Media Awareness, also taught as Media Literacy and Media Education: instruction in how to analyze various media constructions in film, television, radio, and Internet programming and advertisements in order to guard against effects such as misrepresentation and manipulation. Critical Media Awareness is useful in helping students learn how to gather and use more accurate information from media so that they can make better informed decisions about politics, government, and other social concerns. Students analyze and evaluate how various media are made and learn how to recognize propaganda, censorship, and bias in news and public affairs programming, along with stereotyping, cyberbullying, and other negative media use. By creating and producing their own media messages in video projects, students demonstrate an understaning of media construction and how to use it effectively to make their own independent, fair and non-biased media productions for school newscasts, websites and blogs, podcasts, digital storytelling projects, and more.
