Student Videos About the 2012 Presidential Election and Process
News stories and classroom projects
In addition to our year-around invitation to share student-produced videos on all subjects at KET's School Video Project website, KET School Video Project: Election 2012 was an opportunity to integrate multimedia technology and media studies with social studies curriculum during the important national event. Media teachers, Library Media Specialists, STLP groups, classroom teachers, and individual students were encouraged to make videos about the election and related topics and share them here at the KET website. Projects included brief PSAs (public service announcements encouraging voting, for example), explorations of the Electoral College, discussions of issues, mock debates, and more.
Participation and the prize drawing
All Kentucky schools who uploaded a video to us by 5:00 pm EST, October 31, 2012 were automatically entered in a prize drawing to be held on November 1, 2012, for a package of video production software and equipment including: a copy of Adobe Premiere Elements 10 editing software, a Smith-Victor tripod, a Canon HF-R20 camcorder, a portable greenscreen background, a softbox 3-light kit, a Shure microphone and cable, and an iPad teleprompter. The 77 videos from 15 Kentucky schools and districts are listed, below.
Winner of the video equipment prize drawing: Bryan Station High School, Fayette County Schools, Lexington, Kentucky. Ms. Audrey Long, ESL teacher at Bryan Station High, shared a very meaningful project her ESL students from several countries made with the assistance of Bryan Station's Advanced Digital Media class. Their video, "DREAMing about the Election," focuses on DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals), the DREAM Act (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors), and features the presidential "candidates" talking about immigration.
Teacher testimonials
"We are still relatively new to video production here at Station. This project, in particular, fit our needs because it allowed us to work cross-departmentally with the IT Academy, which is one way that we can improve our program because it helps our ESL students see what other opportunities are available to them at Station besides traditional “college prep” classes. Our IT Academy became involved in part because of the technical aspect of the video, but also because many students in the Academy are former ESL students themselves. As the video production side of the IT Academy grows, the new equipment and software will go a long way to helping students be able to be successful in the future videos they produce. — Audrey Long, Bryan Station High School, Lexington, KY
"This video project has been awesome; the kids have been so engaged and excited throughout the whole unit! Video projects, I'm finding, naturally lend themselves to a variety of topics. I was able to meet so many different state standards all in one project! I'm already planning a Thanksgiving video project/unit for my 4th graders; I'm going to try to incorporate a reader's theater. We'll see what I come up with. I'll keep you informed and upload things as they're completed. Our parents will love seeing the videos up on your website!" — Camille Davis, Christ the King Elementary, Lexington, KY
"I think what you all are doing with your education branch and school video project and training is a tremendous asset to schools across the state. I will encourage the kids look at it for inspiration and simply to see what their peers are doing." —Michelle Rauch, Brodcasting Instructor, Eastside Technical Center, Lexington, KY
