Student Videos About Helping the Environment
News stories, public service announcements, and classroom projects
In addition to our year-around invitation to share student-produced videos on all subjects at KET's School Video Project website, the KET School Video Project — Our Environment: Local Solutions, was an opportunity to integrate multimedia technology and media studies with science curriculum in a fun and meaningful spring project, along with a chance to win an iPad and accessories for making more great video projects. Social studies. science, and art-related project focus was on local solutions to environmental problems: brief projects like PSAs (public service announcements) on ways to conserve resources, news-story expolorations on how to prevent polution, discussions of environmental problems and local solutions, mock debates, and more. We received a good collection of thoughtful student video productions that can be seen, below.
Participation and the prize drawing
All Kentucky public, private, and homeschools who uploaded a video to us by the end of April 30, 2013, were automatically entered in a prize drawing to be held on May 1 for an iPad and video production gear including a microphone, tripod, and iPad tripod adapter. The 20 submitted videos from Kentucky schools are listed, below.

Winner of the video equipment prize drawing is Tim Withers, for Wayne County High School, Monticello, Kentucky. Mr. Tim Withers, art and video teacher at Wayne County High, is a regular supporter of the KET School Video Project and shares examples of his students' videos regularly. More of their work can be seen at the KET School Video Project's video page. Wayne County's video, "Our Environment: Eco Friendly Furniture," is a feature story on Tim's daughter, Monica Withers, and her clever fabrication of useable furniture made out of recycled cardboard. Monica also shares how she uses the free Sketchup software program to design eco-friendly structures. The video was shot and edited by Monica and her twin sister, Erica Withers, who often collaborate on video-art projects. These are great models for student projects or for anyone interested in making useful things out of recycled materials. Congratulations to Tim Withers, and to the talented and creative Monica and Erica Withers!

Our Environment: Eco Friendly Furniture
My furniture design in the video is a good example of how we can use everyday disposable items like cardboard boxes to create furniture. These chairs could also be manufactured from other materials like recycled plastics. The chair itself is very steady and will hold sevaral hundred pounds in weight. It might be possible to use a similar design to create houses from recycled material.
