Student Videos About Helping Students Be Healthier, Happier, and More Productive

News stories, public service announcements, and classroom projects

In addition to our year-around invitation to share student-produced videos on all subjects at KET's School Video Project website, the Student Health: Growing Up Well special project was an opportunity to integrate multimedia technology and media studies with Kentucky science and practical living curriculum and health standards in a fun activity for project-based learning.

Project focus was on school and community efforts to help Kentucky students be healthy so they can feel better and perform better in school. Schools were encouraged to submit videos such as PSAs (public service announcements) on ways to improve eating habits; news-story expolorations on how to avoid substance abuse or school programs of information on how to be healthier; or recorded discussions of common health problems and solutions.

Participation and prize drawing for an iPad Mini

All Kentucky public, private, and homeschools who uploaded a video to us by Friday, November 22, 2013 were automatically be entered in a prize drawing to be held on Monday, Nov. 25 for an iPad mini. The 28 submitted videos from Kentucky schools are listed, below. Several are strong personal statements, and all are well-made school projects focusing on important practical living topics covered in curriculum.

Winner of the prize drawing for an iPad Mini is the third-grade STLP video team from Brandenburg Primary, Meade County Schools, led by Library Media Specialist, Allison Doutaz, and School Technology Coordinator, Pam Harshfield.

Brandenburg STLP's video, Food News, is a cleverly-made three minutes of healthy eating information and tips designed to look like a television news program. "Apple Peel" and "Berry Patch" are the news anchors who introduce an interview with "Patty Plate"; a traffic report ("Avoid Sugar Street because of the Gummy Worm tie-up...it's too sugary!"); a weather forecast; and sports, all charmingly presented by student-producers "Broc O'Lee," "Orange Slice," and "Peach Pit."

Their video project is an excellent example of how effective multimedia projects can be made with a minimum of basic equipment and software. Brandenburg students, with teacher supervision, used a FLIP camcorder (discontinued, see something like a Canon HF-R40 now); a digital still camera; Windows Movie Maker editing software, included free with Windows pcs; the Microsoft Paint graphics program, also included on Windows pcs; Audacity audio recording software (also free, used for additional narration because their version of Windows Movie Maker didn't include the sound recording feature); and Tux Paint, another free graphics program. With a student-performed song, handmade graphics, an entertaining presentation, and a healthy recipe tickertape running at the bottom of the screen, Brandenburg's video producers created an entertaining project that encourages students to eat well.

See the other excellent video projects on student health below, including a powerful statement of how Words are Like Tattoos, amusing admonishments from the Heatlhty Food Fairy, a student's healthy transformation in Zombie Counseling, a charming greenscreen video celebrating Milk Facts, and more.
