Make a Table, Chart, or List
Organization is an essential skill for problem solving. A table, chart, or list can often help a student organize the information in a problem and thus help the student find the solution. It will help students if you demonstrate making tables and lists to organize information.
Read the following problem and see how you could use a table, chart, or list to solve it.
Example:
The third grade class at Jackson Elementary has decided to make
ice cream sundaes. The teacher purchased four different flavors of
ice cream and five toppings. How many different variations of ice
cream sundaes can the class make using one of each of the flavors and toppings?
Make a simple list using F for flavor and T for topping.
F1, F2, F3, F4
T1, T2, T3, T4, T5
Now combine one of each flavor and topping to make the different ice cream sundaes. Can you visualize the type of list that you would make?
