Application Skills: Making the Connection

Think for a moment about how difficult your life would be if you could not use any of the vast knowledge you possess. Think of what it would be like to have to learn everything from scratch—not to be able to apply information that you already have to a new situation.

You apply information in a new context when you

  • Travel to a new area and use your ability to read and interpret maps to find your way
  • Cook with a new recipe
  • Use geometry formulas to find out the amount of paint needed for your house or square footage of carpet needed for your den

Application skills allow you to transfer information you already know to new situations.
