Defining Analysis Skills in Language Arts Reading

Analysis skills are used differently in Language Arts Reading. In reading, literary analysis skills focus on the artistic intent of the writer and how she/he creates meaning through literary language. Analysis questions tend to focus on specific parts of a text, rather than the text as a whole.

In Language Arts Reading, analysis questions require students to

  • Draw conclusions
  • Understand consequences
  • Identify elements of style and structure
  • Identify the author’s use of different techniques, such as tone, word choice, characterization, details, and figurative language
