Making the Connection: Part I and Part II

Both parts of the Writing Test assess many of the same skills, but in different formats. The more you can emphasize the relationship between Parts I and II, the better your students will do on both parts of the test.

For example, one of the content areas for Part I is organization. Organization includes topic sentences, text divisions, unity, and coherence.

• In Part I, students revise the organization of passages as they answer multiple-choice questions.
• In Part II, students must organize their own essays, using the same skills demonstrated in the multiple-choice section.

As you teach skills for Part I of the test, tie them to the composition, revision, and editing skills needed to write an effective essay.
