Text Division

Effective writing is composed of ideas that are related in some particular way. Ideas must flow from sentence to sentence as well as from paragraph to paragraph in a given passage. An important part of organization is the ability to correctly divide text.

Students need to understand text division, or paragraphing, in order to be effective writers. On the GED Writing Test Part I, some multiple-choice items will focus on text division as well.

Items focusing on text division ask students to identify

• where a paragraph should be divided into two paragraphs
• where two paragraphs should be combined into one paragraph
