The Essay Prompt

Before you begin your review of the GED Essay Scoring Guide, first take a look at a sample of an essay prompt (topic). This prompt is the basis for each of the sample essays that you will be reviewing in this web-based training.

What is one important goal you would like to achieve in the next few years?

In your essay, identify that goal. Explain how you plan to achieve it. Use your personal observations, experience, and knowledge to support your essay.

Notice that the topic consists of two parts:

  • An informative statement or question. In this case, the topic asks the student to decide on one goal to discuss.
  • A description of how the student should develop the essay. The student is encouraged to use real-life experience and knowledge to develop the essay.

The structure of every GED Essay Writing Prompt will be similar to the one above. Take time to walk your students through several sample prompts. Help them understand what the prompt is asking for. Knowing how to read the writing prompt will lessen the anxiety your students feel about the GED Language Arts Writing Test.
