Get Out and Bike!
“People say they would ride their bike more if they had a safe place to ride.” Martha Emmons, co-owner, BikeWorld, Paducah, Ky.
There’s a move afoot to make streets safe and accessible for everyone, whether traveling by car, bus, on bike or foot. “For a child to ride his bike to the end of the driveway and back up to the garage he’s tired of it. You want to venture out.” Hutch Smith, co-owner, BikeWorld, Paducah, Ky.
Residents are asking for “complete streets” that make their communities more livable by ensuring everyone has room to move and greater opportunity for physical activity.
Action Tips for your Community
- Get Moving – Contact your local officials about opening city streets for activity. On new roadway projects, plan ahead for “complete streets” with biking and walking lanes.
- Fuel Up Healthy – Make sure your community festivals, block parties and church suppers offer healthy food alternatives. Check out this informative booklet: Eat Smart Kentucky, Guidelines for Healthy Foods and Beverages at Meetings, Gatherings, and Events.
- Involve Everyone – Have your business, neighborhood, faith or community organizations survey local parks, playgrounds and community centers to ensure they are safe, clean, and available to kids and families.
