These "how-to" programs explore different countries and cultures through hands-on crafts projects. Each program demonstrates five or six easy projects that can be done in the classroom. Though inspired by various countries' folk traditions, the projects also allow for individual creativity.


Program Descriptions/Air Dates

  1. A Craft Adventure—Make crafty travel accessories like luggage tags, album covers, and travel shirts. (Jan 22)

  2. China—Fashion the traditional decorations for a Chinese New Year party. (Jan 29)

  3. Africa—Create African masks, beads, floor cloths, and a mancala game. (Feb 5)

  4. U.S.A.—Explore traditional American crafts: dolls, Native American jewelry, a paper crazy quilt, tin lanterns, and a flower press. (Feb 12)

  5. Mexico—Use the bright colors of Mexico to make bean pottery, worry dolls, paper flowers, fiesta dolls, and piñata baskets. (Feb 19)

  6. Japan—Learn Japanese design concepts while making origami, Temari balls, watercolor windsocks, and paper fans. (Feb 26)

  7. United Kingdom—Explore British fiber traditions like tatting, weaving, and knitting. (Mar 5)

  8. Canada—Learn about nature and Native American art while making a leaf journal, a walking stick, nature stamps, story hides, and totem poles. (Mar 12)

  9. Australia—The animals and aboriginal people of Australia inspire the following craft activities: cave painting, pony-bead crocodiles, boomerangs, koalas, and wooly sheep. (Mar 19)

  10. African Animals—The animals of Africa are featured in a T-shirt snake, wild animal puppets, paper-chain animals, a memory photo page, a lizard shirt, and a baby hippo. (Mar 26)

  11. Egypt, India, Morocco—Learn about the Near East while making wind chimes, batik shirts, magic carpets, pyramid pictures, and a clay pull toy. (Apr 9)

  12. Italy—Art inspired by the Renaissance is featured in mosaic tiles, stained glass, and crayon resist pots. (Apr 16)

  13. Home Again—Make crafts to preserve your travel memories: a travel briefcase, pencil pals, a luggage pocket page, a travel photo album, and an around-the-world game. (Apr 23)
