This one-semester course, taught via satellite broadcast and the Internet, is a survey of the beliefs, traditions, and customs of humankind as reflected in the artsvisual arts, music, dance, theatre, and literature. It explores the cultural and historical significance of the arts, promotes an examination into the nature of creativity, and considers universal questions as evidenced in the arts.
The two primary objectives of the course are to develop appreciation for and thoughtful, scholarly responses to the arts. Students view and compare arts from diverse cultures and different historical periods, explore similar themes in multiple forms of art, consider the connections between ancient or tribal artworks and their modern counterparts, and compare the characteristics of various art forms within a single culture or historic era.
Led by KET Distance Learning instructor Liz Jewell, Humanities Through the Arts is designed to be taught in partnership with a certified classroom teacher. The satellite instructor provides daily lesson plans, online resources, exams and keys, assignments, and review questions. The classroom teacher is free to modify or supplement this material, and the classroom teacher determines the students' final grades.
The television component of this course also makes use of the KET-produced Humanities Connections modules introducing basic elements of various arts forms.
More details about course content, costs, equipment requirements, and registration are available at the KET Distance Learning Humanities Through the Arts FAQ page.
