Within view of the Louisville skyline, theres a nature preserve that not only serves as a haven for almost 400 species of modern-day birds and fish, but also preserves the remains of creatures more than 350 million years old. Its the Falls of the Ohio, where the centerpiece is one of the worlds largest exposed Devonian Age fossil beds. On this KET-produced field trip to the Falls, students can
- visit the outer fossil beds and see the fossils of many bizarre creatures.
- learn how fossils are formed.
- find out how the fossil beds were exposed by the same glacial action that created the Ohio River Valley.
- learn the historic importance of the falls to Native Americans and to the settling and development of Louisville.
- see some of the animals that now call the Falls of the Ohio home.
- tour the Interpretive Center and get a behind-the-scenes look at how some of its displays were created.
This program premiered on November 30, 1999.
