KET takes you and your students to the Thomas family’s BLT Farms in Elizabethtown, a family enterprise where the kids have major responsibilities in the farming operation. Topics of discussion include right-to-farm laws, urban encroachment on farmland, and animal waste disposal, as well as the answers to questions like these:

  • Why do pigs like to roll in the mud?
  • Are pigs smart?
  • Why do pig farmers usually also raise corn?
  • How do farmers keep animal waste from getting into streams and groundwater?
  • What’s it like to grow up on a farm?
  • Do farmers have to use chemicals on their crops?

The Electronic Field Trip to a Pig Farm was a partnership among KET, the University of Kentucky College of Agriculture, and the Kentucky Farm Bureau. The program was first broadcast on October 14, 1997.
