KET Distance Learning humanities instructor Liz Jewell hosts this tour of Kentuckys oldest and largest art museum, the Speed Art Museum on the downtown campus of the University of Louisville. Beginning at the loading dock as crates containing a traveling exhibition of Rodin sculptures arrive, she shows students how the museum staff handles, unpacks, and mounts these precious objectssome of them weighing upwards of 1,200 poundsand creates an enjoyable and educational exhibit around them.
The field trip also includes a look at the Speeds eclectic permanent collection, which ranges from European old masters to African and Native American art to body parts and dog-themed works. Exhibit designers demonstrate some of the innovative hands-on displays and computer software that allow museums to create interactive art experiences for todays visitors, and curators explain how they create and maintain the proper environmental conditions to preserve artworks for future generations of visitors.
