Kentucky health care professionals and advocates discuss the diagnosis and treatment of autism and provide resources for families coping with it. Panelists are Paul Glaser, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor in the departments of psychiatry, pediatrics, and anatomy and neurobiology at the University of Kentucky Medical Center; Trish Gallagher of the Weisskopf Center for the Evaluation of Children at the University of Louisville; Myra Beth Bundy, Ph.D., assistant professor at Eastern Kentucky University; and Melanie Tyner-Wilson, a disabilities advocate and parent of a child with autism. A discussion of how to help children with autism succeed in school, including information on balancing access to the general curriculum, meeting the other needs of the child with autism, identifying and addressing sensory integration problems, setting goals and objectives, effective instructional plans and teaching strategies, the use of assistive technology, the roles of specialists who work with children with autism, and resources and support for parents. 56 minutes.
