In this nine-part social studies series, vignettes and discussions explore social structure and daily life in nine historical periods that have directly influenced the culture and politics of today’s United States. The societies and times covered range from the ancient civilizations whose influences can be seen in modern Western law, government, and art to critical periods in America’s own history.

101. Living at the Plymouth Colony
Explores 17th-century life in the Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts.
102. Living During the Industrial Revolution
Focuses on New England to examine the changes in society and family life brought about by new technology in the late 19th century: the revolution in the textile industry, the rise of factories and the growth of industrial cities, the cotton gin, the advent of interchangeable parts and assembly-line work, and the use of steam power.
103. Living in Ancient Egypt
Illustrates various aspects of daily life during ancient times and the important role of the Nile River in sustaining the ordinary people who helped build the great civilization of ancient Egypt.
104. Living in Ancient Greece
Stories from historic sites across Greece look at how life was lived in Greek towns more than 2,500 years ago.
105. Living in Medieval Europe
Explores how castles were constructed and laid out and who lived in them, how knights were trained, how ordinary people lived, and how the devotion of medieval Christians created the golden age of cathedral building.
106. Living in Spanish Colonial America
Life in a Spanish colony was quite different from life in an English colony. Historical reenactments provide an in-depth look at what it was like to live at a Spanish mission in California.
107. Living in the Roman Empire
Examines the history and the civilization of ancient Rome, including religion, pastimes, military prowess, and the all-powerful government.
108. Living on a Slave Plantation
Explores the European roots of the plantation system, beginning with the problems the first English settlers encountered in trying to establish tobacco farms in the wilderness, and daily life for both slaves and owners.
109. Living on the American Frontier
Explores the daily activities of 19th-century American pioneers.
