This Plains tribe inhabits the Platte River basin and the Black Hills of South Dakota.
102. Iroquois: Indians of the Northeast
Five warring Native American tribes—Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga, and Seneca—negotiated the Great Law of Peace and formed the Iroquois League, the structure of which influenced American political thinkers. But the American Revolution split the confederation, pitting old friends against one another and signaling the decline of their cultures.

104. Navajo: Indians of the Southwest
The country's most populous modern tribe, the Navajo live in northwestern New Mexico, Arizona, and southeastern Utah.
105. Seminoles: Indians of the Southeast
The Florida Seminoles, whose descendants now live in Oklahoma and Florida, took in migrants from Georgia as well as runaway African-American slaves.
106. Shawnee: Indians of the Midwest
The Algonkian-speaking Shawnee lived in the Ohio River Valley. Tecumseh became a great leader during their resistance against white settlement, unifying many native peoples until he was killed in the War of 1812.
