This revision of Portraits of American Presidents focuses on individual presidents’ influence on the historical events of their eras, shortens each program to fit better into classroom units of study, includes improved graphic detail in maps, omits some on-camera commentators, and adds two programs: one on the philosophical and historical foundations of the American presidency and one on recent presidents.

103. John Adams and Thomas Jefferson
The rise of political parties, the XYZ Affair, Marbury v. Madison, and the Louisiana Purchase were among the great events during these presidents' tenures. 13 minutes.

104. Madison and Monroe
These 19th-century presidents dealt with foreign threats in the War of 1812 and the Monroe Doctrine. 13 minutes.

105. J.Q. Adams, Jackson, and Van Buren
Spotlights injustices to African Americans and Native tribes while white Americans move west. 13 minutes.

106. Harrison, Tyler, Polk, and Taylor
As the westward movement and the notion of Manifest Destiny gained momentum, controversies about slavery, border disputes, and territorial rights were reflected in presidential conflicts and short, unmemorable terms of office. 13 minutes.

107. Fillmore, Pierce, and Buchanan
Features the Kansas-Nebraska Act, the Dred Scott decision, the founding of the Republican Party, and John Brown's raid at Harper's Ferry. 10 minutes.

108. Abraham Lincoln
Remembered for his great writing and tragic character, Lincoln was dedicated to keeping the Union intact. To that end, he delayed emancipation of the slaves and suspended some legal rights during the Civil War. 11 minutes.

109. Andrew Johnson, Grant, and Hayes
The presidency was seriously damaged during the Reconstruction period by Johnson's impeachment, Grant's corruption scandal, and Hayes' election fraud. The era was also the Gilded Age of economic expansion, Western outlaws, Edison's inventions, and massive immigration. 12 minutes.

110. Garfield, Arthur, Cleveland, and Harrison
Features Garfield's assassination, industrialization, urbanization, and immigration. As America's frontier closes, involvement in world affairs expands. 13 minutes.

111. Cleveland, McKinley, and Theodore Roosevelt
Features the economic problems under Cleveland, the upturn under McKinley, and America's growing wealth and power during Teddy Roosevelt's term. 10 minutes.

112. Taft, Wilson, Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover
World War I, the League of Nations, the business boom of the 1920s, and growing military shadows. 13 minutes.

113. Franklin D. Roosevelt
Contrasts FDR's own handicap and his famous speeches against fear with the crises of the Great Depression and World War II. 11 minutes.

114. Truman, Eisenhower, and Kennedy
World War II ends with the atomic bomb, the Marshall Plan, and the Truman Doctrine. The popular Eisenhower continues the Cold War. The stylish Kennedy passes a test of leadership with the Cuban Missile Crisis, but assassination cuts his promise short. 13 minutes.

115. Lyndon Johnson, Nixon, and Ford
Features the Great Society, the Voting Rights Act, civil rights victories, and the Vietnam War. Martin Luther King's and Robert Kennedy's assassinations shock the world, and the Watergate affair forces Nixon to resign. 13 minutes.

116. Carter, Reagan, and G.H.W. Bush
Features Middle East problems, the Iran-Contra scandal, recession, and the end of the Communist threat. Reagan restores some presidential prestige. 12 minutes.

117. Clinton and G.W. Bush
Clinton's presidency is undermined by an increasingly apathetic public, a Republican legislature, and personal scandals. G.W. Bush takes office with an Electoral College victory despite losing the popular vote and soon finds his attention focused mainly on terrorism. 9 minutes.
