This KET production documents the efforts of Native Americans in Kentucky to reconstruct their ancestors’ history in the state through archaeological evidence as well as oral history and tradition. In particular, the program addresses the myth that Kentucky was “the dark and bloody ground”—a hunting ground where people passed through but did not live permanently.

A Native Presence then brings the story into contemporary times by examining the infamous looting incident at Western Kentucky’s Slack Farm in the late 1980s. Hundreds of graves were desecrated and a valuable archaeological site virtually destroyed. The resulting outcry led to new protective laws and a reexamination by Native activists and archaeologists of the issue of how to research and display the history of a culture while still respecting its people’s burial rites and beliefs. In emphasizing the new spirit of cooperation that emerged from the Slack Farm incident, the program points out the value of a multicultural perspective in examining contemporary issues.
