These unpaid internships are available year-round. Two interns are needed each semester. Junior-, senior-, and graduate-level students attending any Kentucky college or university and Kentucky residents attending a college or university out of state may apply.
10 hours per week (approximately 150 hours per semester) are required, although special arrangements may be made when school requirements differ.
The engineering interns will divide their time among three areas and perform some or all of the following duties:
- Maintenance Shop—This area includes broadcast maintenance, video engineering, and equipment installation. Interns will learn a variety of basic skills, including camera shading and timing, use of test equipment, some networking, and understanding cable drawings and rack layouts for related equipment. Schedules range between 8:30 am and 5 pm.
- Master Control/Tape Engineering Duties —This area is the heart of any television broadcast facility. It is the origination point for all programming, whether it be from satellite or server based file system. KET broadcasts three distinct services from our fifteen transmitters located throughout the state. KET is a statewide television network. Interns will assist in the day-to-day Master Control/Ingest operation and become familiar with broadcast logs, basic operation of broadcast VTRs, signal monitoring devices, transmitter monitoring, multi-channel computerized automation, dubs of program material, DVD authoring, and preparation of programming for air and KET’s website. The daily schedule can be very flexible, ranging from 6 am to 12:30 am.
