This edition of Jubilee offers up traditional bluegrass from two of Kentucky’s finest up-and-coming local groups: Mount Sterling-based Billie Renée and Cumberland Gap and Williamsburg’s Southern Sons.

Formed in the late 1990s, Billie Renée and Cumberland Gap features Billie Renée Johnson, guitarists Justin Robert and Bill Johnson (Billie Renée’s father), Josh Hymer on banjo, Harold Nixon on bass, and Kevin Amburgey on mandolin. The group performs frequently at bluegrass festivals throughout the state, showcasing its brand of traditional bluegrass embellished with a unique, modern touch.

Southern Sons is a young, fast-upcoming bluegrass group that has impressed critics and music-festival crowds alike with progressive instrumentation and songwriting talent. Songs written by the Sons have been recorded by Richard Bennett as well as Dean Osborne and Eastbound.
