He has played the Grand Ole Opry, is the only bluegrass performer ever to appear on the cover of Smithsonian magazine, and is known among fans of bluegrass as one of the genre’s most influential and established musicians. But Melvin Goins seems almost unaware of such accomplishments as he keeps his performance rolling with purebred bluegrass tunes interspersed with his unique sense of homespun humor.

Hailing from Bluefield, WV, Goins has been performing bluegrass music for more than 50 years. After playing with the Lonesome Pine Fiddlers and then with Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys, Goins and his brother Ray formed their own Goins Brothers band. Melvin reestablished the band as Melvin Goins and Windy Mountain in 1999 after Ray’s retirement in 1997.

This performance by Melvin Goins and Windy Mountain was taped at IIIrd Tyme Out’s Poppy Mountain Bluegrass Festival in Morehead, KY.
