When asked about Mountain Heart’s approach to bluegrass, guitarist and vocalist Steve Gulley says, “If we don’t feel inspired by a song, then we don’t sing it or play it.” It is that central element—a consistency of vision in arranging and performing—that has brought Mountain Heart a great deal of attention from all across the country music and bluegrass community. This Jubilee program captures the band’s spirited performance at the 2005 River of Music Party in Owensboro.

Made up of veteran performers and talented studio musicians, Mountain Heart received the International Bluegrass Music Association Emerging Band of the Year award in 1999—before it had even secured an official recording contract. Since then, the group has appeared regularly on the Grand Ole Opry; headlined venues and festivals across the country; and performed with George Jones, Merle Haggard, Ricky Skaggs, Brad Paisley, and LeAnn Rimes.

Mountain Heart features Steve Gulley (Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver) and Clay Jones (Ricky Skaggs and Kentucky Thunder) on guitar, Adam Steffey (Alison Krauss and Union Station, Dixie Chicks) on mandolin, Jim Van Cleve (Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver, Alison Krauss) on fiddle, Barry Abernathy (Silver Creek, IIIrd Tyme Out, Doyle Lawson and Quicksilver) on banjo, and Jason Moore (Knee Deep in Bluegrass) on bass.
