On this edition of Jubilee, Robinella and the CCStringBand perform a hybrid of bluegrass and jazz-tinged country music, while David Gans demonstrates the future of solo performance as a singer-songwriter.

Born Robin Ella Tipton in Maryville, TN, just south of Knoxville in the foothills of the Great Smoky Mountains, Robinella is the daughter of a Baptist deacon and choir leader. She and Cruz Contreras formed Robinella and the CCStringBand after meeting at a bluegrass show in 1997. The band’s repertoire combines elements of all the music they love—from jazz and gospel to bluegrass, folk, and country—all skillfully played by Cruz’s brother Billy on fiddle, guitarist Hans Holzen, bassist David Peeples, and drummer Daryl Johnson.

Self-professed “honky-tonk hippie” David Gans has taken his efforts as a singer-songwriter to a new level by using a digital looping device to create multiple layers of sound. Gans’ writing has been compared to Hank Williams, Jackson Browne, and Robert Fripp, while his blend of new technology and acoustic virtuosity makes each appearance a one-man-band delight.
