Silver Arm leads off this edition of Jubilee with its impressive, energetic instrumentals and haunting ballads. The group combines lively traditional dance music with beautiful ballads and Swedish, French, and Romanian selections along with Irish music. Cindy Matyi plays flute and concertina; Stephen Matyi joins her on bouzouki, guitar, and banjo; Justin Bridges plays fiddle; and John Sherman is on guitar.

They’re followed by Zoe Speaks—the husband-and-wife folk duo of Mitch Barrett and Carla Gover. The two jump in and out of their Eastern Kentucky vernacular to play everything from traditional ballads to guitar-thumping, contemporary acoustic tunes.

The music of Zoe Speaks draws on the sounds of Appalachia, but Carla and Mitch often follow other influences to create a unique sound featuring vocal harmonies and brilliant musicianship. They accompany themselves on guitar, clawhammer banjo, and dulcimer. During performances, Mitch has also been known to throw in a story, while Carla enjoys getting the audience on its feet with some clogging.
