With a collection of youthful and high-spirited original songs, Eastern Kentucky’s Fast Lane brings a new and refreshing air to the Bluegrass scene. On this episode of Jubilee, recorded at the 2008 Renfro Valley Bluegrass Music Festival, the up-and-coming Bluegrass hopefuls share their energetic talents and good time tunes.
Featuring Josh Martin on lead guitar and vocals; Brent, Kayla, and Brock Amburgey on banjo, bass and rhythm guitar, respectively; and Albon Clevenger on fiddle, the relative newcomers enjoy a broad range of influences, from traditional sounds of Bill Monroe and Flatt and Scruggs to the more contemporary work of Mountain Heart, IIIrd Thyme Out, Ricky Skaggs, and Nickel Creek. The group presents a soulfully new sound in the depth of its songwriting, while retaining all the best elements of classic Bluegrass in an uncomplicated, straightforward performance style.
In February 2009, the band finished in fifth place at the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music in America (SPBGMA) International Band Festival in Nashville, Tennessee, marking what looks like a promising future for this talented group. For fans of Bluegrass old and new, Fast Lane’s Jubilee debut delivers a look at the bright future of Bluegrass music through the sounds of one of its more gifted new bands.
