Kenny Neal's performance at the 2010 W. C. Handy Blues & Barbecue Festival in Henderson, KY, reflects the sizzling sound and diverse repertoire for which this Louisiana native is known.

Neal is well-known as a bass player, having toured as part of Buddy Guy's band for almost eight years, but he is also versant on lead guitar, harmonica, trumpet, and piano. In his set at Henderson, he sings and plays lead, accompanied by Fairo Kenny and Frederick Neal on keyboards, Darnell Neal on bass, and Bryan Morris on drums. They perform a wide selection of songs, including "Since I Met You Baby," "Starlight Diamond," "I'm Going to New York," "You've Got to Hurt Before You Heal," and "Any Fool Will Do."

In an interview, Neal recalls participating in his first talent show at age six, doing a cover of a James Brown song, and tells how he learned the basics from his father, singer and blues harmonica master Raful Neal. "My dad started us out playing, and ever since I was a baby, I was around instruments," he says.
