The Stella Vees’ high-energy performances and mix of Chicago and West Coast-style blues reflect the influences of legendary blues musicians like Hollywood Fats, T-Bone Walker, Magic Sam and Little Walter. The band’s philosophy is to allow “plenty of space between notes,” expressing the blues in a way so that the listener feels the structure of the song.

The group was formed in 2001 by four musicians who hosted the Lexington Blues Society’s weekly jam sessions. Its sound captures many qualities of the early blues, and the group's performance at the Handy festival features its trademark simple rhythms and unique arrangements and dynamics.

The band is made up of Jason Lockwood on vocals and guitar, Mark Hoekstra on harmonica, Tim Dennison on bass, and Steve Parrish on drums.
