For the past 30 years, Russell Moore has been doing what he grew up wanting to do – playing music. He and his band IIIrd Tyme Out have been together for more than 20 years.

“Musically what keeps us going and progressing is our influence of and love of other music, as well,” says Moore in a interview in Nashville during the 2012 International Bluegrass Music Association (IBMA) Fan Fest. The band members incorporate ideas from other genres, including country, rock 'n' roll and pop. “We’re influenced by our surroundings, no doubt about that,” Moore says.

Moore is IBMA’s most-awarded male vocalist, winning the Male Vocalist of the Year award in 1994, 1997, 2010, 2011 and 2012.

“I’m honored once again to represent the IBMA and its voting members and bluegrass music as its male vocalist of the year. It’s always a surprise but always a joy to get to travel around and represent all the people that voted for me and the organization.”

In their set at the 2012 Fan Fest, IIIrd Tyme Out performed, among other songs, “Hard Rock Mountain Prison,” “Sugarfoot Rag,” “Raining in LA,” and “Wade in the Water.”

Members of IIIrd Tyme Out are Wayne Benson on mandolin, Steve Dilling on banjo, Justen Haynes on fiddle, Edgar Loudermilk on bass, and Moore on guitar/vocals.

Larry Sparks is among the most widely known and respected touring musicians in bluegrass and gospel music. He began his career in the mid-1960s as a guitarist with the Stanley Brothers and later became lead vocalist for Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys. He formed his own band, The Lonesome Ramblers, in 1969.

At 2012 Fan Fest, The Lonesome Ramblers performance included “Georgia Peaches,” “The Last Suit You Wear,” “Blue Virginia Blues,” “What Kind of Man,” and “Tennessee 1949.”

Members of The Lonesome Ramblers are Mike Feagan, fiddle; Jackie Kincaid, mandolin; Tyler Mullins, banjo; D Sparks, bass; and Larry Sparks, guitar/vocals.

IBMA Fan Fest is a major event in bluegrass, bringing together established and rising stars with fans from around the world. The KET recording of the 2012 Fan Fest performances is the first time these premier sets have been recorded for broadcast.
