Lou Reid and Carolina (#212)

The seasoned veterans of Lou Reid and Carolina strut their bluegrass stuff.

When audiences hear the outstanding vocals and expert musicianship of Lou Reid and Carolina, they are not surprised to learn that the band’s members have played with the top country and bluegrass stars in the country. Reid himself has performed with Ricky Skaggs, Bill Monroe, Dolly Parton, Emmylou Harris, Roger McGuinn, Vince Gill, and many others, and another of his current gigs is with the legendary group Seldom Scene.

In addition to Reid on guitar, Carolina includes banjo player Gena Britt and two members from Richmond, KY: Richard Bennett on guitar and Randall Barnes on acoustic bass.

Reid describes the band’s music as progressive bluegrass, drawing on the influences of traditional, country, folk, blues, and rock ’n’ roll. “I like trying many different styles,” he says.

This Jubilee performance spotlights ballads, instrumentals, and gospel songs. The tunes include “Sailing Around the Ocean,” “I Wonder Where You Are Tonight,” “Beneath the Carolina Moon,” “The Shenandoah Breakdown,” “God Loves His Children,” and “Free-Born Man.” Summoned back to the stage for an encore, the band performs “Knocking on Your Door.”
