A Photographic Sampler
James Baker Hall has been a photographer longer than he’s been a writer. These photos of his friends (top to bottom) Wendell Berry, Gurney Norman, Ed McClanahan, and Bobbie Ann Mason, along with others scattered elsewhere on this site, are from his book A Spring-Fed Pond.
Published in 2002 by Crystal Communications, A Spring-Fed Pond chronicles Jim’s friendships
with the four, along with his wife Mary Ann Taylor-Hall, in photos taken over the course of several
decades. The project began as part of the University of Kentucky’s Literary Kentucky celebration,
for which Jim was asked to create a photo exhibit. As he sifted through his photographic files, it soon
became obvious that a full-size book was waiting to be born. Here’s a sampling ...
