On the Right Side of a Dream

The story of Juanita Lewis continues in Williams’ third novel. Juanita, whose homestyle cooking won the hearts of customers at the diner in Paper Moon, Montana, decides to go to culinary school.

By the way, Williams says her own cooking is more like Juanita’s homestyle approach. “I make the meatloaf and the spaghetti and meatballs and the fried chicken and the sweet potato casserole.” To research On the Right Side of a Dream, she sat in on culinary classes at Cincinnati State. “I had a ball. I got to sit at the chef’s table watching these hard-working students make casseroles and petit fours and hors d’oeuvres and soups and stews and cakes. I had such a wonderful time that the section of the book I was working on was not getting written, so at some point my husband said, ‘You are going to have to stop going to the cooking school and actually sit down and write.’ So I finally did that. But I really gained a lot of respect for chefs and the hard work they have to put in. And I got to eat a lot of great food!”

Girls Most Likely

Though Williams says that her works are not generally autobiographical, her fourth novel is set in “the times and places where I grew up, and I really use my hometown of Columbus, OH a great deal in the book.”
