University of Kentucky President Lee Todd released an ambitious business plan in late 2005 aimed at placing UK in the nation’s top tier of public research universities. Rankings are based on based on such measures as the test scores of incoming students, faculty/student ratio, graduation rate and number of advanced degrees awarded, awards and citations, and the number and size of federal and private research grants attracted. Todd discussed the plan itself as well as the benefits of turning the state’s flagship university into a top-20 research institution—not only for the university itself, but also for Kentucky as a whole.
