Two weeks before the crash of Comair Flight 5191 in Lexington claimed his life, Patrick Smith talked to host Bill Goodman about his 20-year involvement with Habitat for Humanity, which uses donated materials and labor to build houses for those who cannot otherwise afford them.

Patrick Smith’s experience as a Habitat for Humanity volunteer included hands-on construction projects in Ghana, South Africa, Mexico, and areas of Sri Lanka and India hit hard by the 2004 tsunami, as well as three years’ service as president of the Lexington chapter. He was named Habitat for Humanity International’s Volunteer of the Year in 2003 and was a member of the boards of directors of both the international organization and its Lexington affiliate. He was on his way to help people in the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast of Mississippi when he boarded Flight 5191 in August 2006.
