Sen. Jim Bunning, who was a Hall of Fame pitcher in Major League Baseball, was elected to the U.S. Senate in 1998 and re-elected in 2004. He was the Republican candidate for governor in 1983, losing to Martha Layne Collins. Four years later, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in Northern Kentucky’s 4th District. He served in the House from 1987 to 1999.
