Chandler held his first public office as Kentucky state auditor, then followed up with two terms as attorney general. After an unsuccessful bid for governor in 2003, when he lost to Ernie Fletcher, Chandler won a special election to fill Fletcher’s vacated seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
