West and his wife, Deborah, spent two years traveling to a host of restaurants in towns around the Commonwealth, sometimes eating in five or six restaurants in a day. The results of that gastronomic tour were revealed in his book Eating Your Way Across Kentucky: 101 Must Places To Eat. His rules on which establishments to visit were simple: no chain restaurants and, whenever possible, only restaurants that had been operating for at least five years.
