Incumbent Gov. Ernie Fletcher, a physician, became Kentucky’s first Republican governor in 32 years when he was elected in 2003. Prior to that, he was a one-term state representative and a two-term U.S. congressman. Attorney Steve Beshear, the Democratic challenger, served in government before as a three-term state representative, the state attorney general, and lieutenant governor.
