To prepare for her stint with the Baghdad bureau of the McClatchy Co., the company that owns the Herald-Leader, Gumbrecht attended “hostile environment training” in Virginia, learning how to spot land mines and administer first aid. On her first day in Baghdad, she was whisked away from the airport in an armored car to settle in at the hotel that doubles as an office building for the McClatchy staff.
Gumbrecht was embedded with the Kentucky National Guard, which transports all manner of supplies to military bases. She talks with host Bill Goodman about her impressions of the unit’s experiences and morale, describes Christmas in Iraq and the National Museum, and shares her perspective on how the local residents view America.
