Andre Dubus, who did not attempt writing fiction until he was in his 20s, talks about odd jobs he held early in his writing career, including tending bar, working at a halfway house for convicts and accompanying a bounty hunter on searches for offenders.
The author also discusses the success of House of Sand and Fog, which was a National Book Award finalist, a selection for Oprah’s Book Club and adapted into a movie starring Ben Kingsley and Jennifer Connelly. The novel was inspired in part, Dubus says, by a chance meeting with a man in an elevator.
Then, Dubus talks about his new novel, The Garden of Last Days, which focuses on a Florida stripper. The idea for the novel, he explains, came from newspaper reports that the 9/11 hijackers visited strip clubs. Dubus also discusses the unorthodox research he conducted for the book.
Finally, the author shares what he enjoys about writing and how he encourages aspiring writers.
