Ben Sollee talks about his debut solo album, Learning to Bend, and reveals the inspiration behind some of his lyrics. He performs “How to See the Sun Rise” and “Just a Song.”

A Lexington native, Sollee discusses his introduction to the cello at Lexington’s Yates Elementary School and his decision to pursue a career as a professional musician. He talks about his previous work with Abigail Washburn and the Sparrow Quartet, which includes banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck and award-winning violinist Casey Driessen.

The young musician also discusses his bicycle ride from Lexington to the 2009 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival in Manchester, Tenn., where he performed. Sollee chose to ride a bicycle to make the trip healthier and more environmentally friendly and allow him to really get a sense of the communities along the way. Sollee also hopes to use the trip to raise awareness about poverty in Appalachia and around the world.
